With all the rain we have gotten, there are a lot of flooded areas around the area, especially by the Big Sioux River, which is where Spencer Dog Park is. It’s a good reminder to not let your dogs play in the flooded waters.

Melissa, CVT at Horizon Pet Care in Brandon, SD says, “The biggest concern with dogs swimming in [flooded] water is that they can get intestinal parasites. The most common being Giardia. Giardia causes bloody diarrhea in dogs. This particular parasite is transmissible to humans especially children. Another concern with swimming in this water is the potential for dogs to be cut on their paws or legs by objects under the surface”. There are a lot of other concerns about dogs going in flooded water, but these are the big issues.

Today will be the last day for a temporary animal shelter in Pierre. Code 3 operated the shelter that helped 178 animals. Now Paws Animal Rescue will help those pets who need to find a home.

For those affected by the flooding in the Yankton area, you can take your pets to a new temporary shelter. The Yankton Police Department, The Heartland Humane Society and The Humane Society of the United States set up the shelter at the 4-H grounds. The Miracle Hockey Association donated the space and PetSmart gave the supplies!

If you would like to volunteer, call Animal Control Office (605) 661- 9494 or the Yankton Police Department (605) 668-5210.

Some great advice from Heartland Humane Society in Yankton about preparing your fur family for relocating due to the flooding. Don’t forget, Heartland Humane Society remains full and will need foster homes for pets and a shelter operated by Code 3 opened in Pierre for animals there.

For pet owners who may need to evacuate, remember:

  • Disposable litter trays (aluminum roasting pans are perfect)
  • Litter or paper toweling
  • Liquid dish soap and disinfectant
  • Disposable garbage bags for clean-up
  • Pet feeding dishes
  • Extra harness and leash (Note: harnesses are recommended for safety and security)
  • Photocopies of medical records and a waterproof container with a two-week supply of any medicine your pet requires.
  • Bottled water, at least 7 days’ worth for each person and pet
  • A traveling bag, crate or sturdy carrier, ideally one for each pet
  • Flashlight
  • Blanket (for scooping up a fearful pet)
  • Recent photos of your pets (in case you are separated and need to make “Lost” posters)
  • Especially for cats: Pillowcase or EvackSack, toys, scoopable litter
  • Especially for dogs: Long leash and yard stake, toys and chew toys, a week’s worth of cage liner.
