DooGooders’ welcomes guest blogs from organizations across the region. This month, we hear from Sharee H. of Sioux Falls wanting to make animal cruelty crimes felonies. You can learn more about the campaign at its website.

Have you ever got something stuck in your head and just can’t get it out? That happens to me when I hear things that make me sick to my stomach like:

  • The guy next door beats his neighbors dog to death with a hammer; his sentence is less than a $400 fine.
  • Someone gives jerky tainted with poison to at least 6 dogs in Tea, SD; no charges filed.
  • A horse is abused with deep rope burns around his legs and severed tendons; the abuser’s punishment is 15 days in jail…5 days in July every year for three years.
  • A man ties his dog to a tree, sets her on fire and lets her burn to death. He was fined $1000 and a few months in jail.

Unfortunately, the list goes on. These are crimes that meet the need for felony punishment, not the ‘slap on the wrist’ sentence of a misdemeanor. But, in the state of South Dakota these horrific crimes are viewed as a misdemeanor; we are one of only 3 other states in the US that have not updated their animal abuse laws to felony status. Yup, something else that makes me sick to my stomach.
Why are we one of those three? Well, it’s not for lack of trying. South Dakota has an agricultural lobby that views animal protection issues as potentially limiting options for farmers – ridiculous but they are entitled to their opinion. We lobby to get the laws changed and they (along with dog breeders – I don’t have enough space to go into that one) lobby to stop us. Both sides, agricultural and animal protection organizations need to find a way to work together and to hammer out an agreement that includes felony penalty for torture, including starving and neglect of our companion animals. I refuse to believe that these two sides are that far apart in our beliefs in what is right and what is humane when it comes to animals.
We need to be the voice of our pets. We need to ensure that our companion animals are protected through legislative means. Our legislators need to know that ending animal suffering is important to us. I believe there is power in numbers so please step up and contact each SD representative and senator about this now. They have the power to help end these travesties. We need the change now.  I want it to be a song that gets stuck in my head not the visions of these crimes and if my stomach is upset, I want too much ice cream to be the culprit not the visions of abused animals.
